"Mr Katy"

My dear friend Katy and I would meet in a zoom call every Wednesday morning during the first difficult months of the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020. We would use this time to share life with each other and talk through different challenges and triumphs.

Katy and I have been friends since the beginning of 2019 and performed together many times but I would say our friendship really deepened through the dark days of the pandemic. It was one of the silver linings for me in that troubling time and I’ll be forever grateful for this ray of sunshine and gift of friendship.

At the end of every zoom call we would have a time of prayer when we would lift each other up to the Lord and pray through any specific requests. It was during this time that we began to really pray for a husband for Katy. She had shared with me her desire to be married and so we started to pray for God’s will in this situation. We knew that if God had a husband included as part of His plans for Katy’s life then He would bring him along in His perfect time.

Katy and I of course didn’t know who we were praying for but we knew God did! It was during these prayer times that we started referring to this mystery man as “Mr Katy.” It wasn’t to emasculate him in any way but simply to give him a title until his real title was revealed!

By the time December 2021 came along, Katy and I were thankful to be performing together once again and this time it was in a production of “A Christmas Carol,” written by Charles Dickens. Katy was playing “The Ghost Of Christmas Past” in a very dramatic, hooded cloak while I took on the less glamorous role of “Emily Cratchit,” wife to “Bob Cratchit.”

It was such a joy to be back on stage again and we had many laughs together that Christmas. Whether it was chuckling about the fact that Katy’s stage cloak reminded me of the Scottish Widow’s advert or comparing our mutual love of sparkly clothing off stage, we were very grateful to be back in the swing of things.

This particular production would go on to provide a few other blessings too however, one in the form of the show’s pianist and master of keys, David Gibson. This lovely young man from Belfast struck up an instant connection with Katy and over the course of the following months, their friendship blossomed into one of romance. It soon became apparent that the unknown identity of “Mr Katy” wasn’t so unknown anymore. It was certainly very clear after David proposed that “Mr Katy” was indeed, Mr Gibson!

As a few of us ladies prepared for Katy’s Hen Party in February 2023, I felt inspired to write a poem especially for the day. Having gone on the journey of praying for this man with Katy, it only seemed right to create a humorous but heartfelt rendition, relaying some of the details of how their relationship began.

Although this little poem has some details which are specific to Katy and David’s story, I pray that it can encourage anyone else who may be praying for a spouse for themselves or on behalf of someone else. I hope we can be encouraged to lift that desire up to our First Love, Jesus Christ and trust it with Him.

May we be reassured as we focus on Jesus and remember that He knows our heart, knows what’s best for us and reveals all in His perfect time. I pray we can surrender our desires to Him and rest knowing that whatever His plan is, it’s exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask for or even imagine.
"We prayed for “Mr Katy” before we knew his name.
Praying for the will of God was certainly the aim!
We prayed for “Mr Katy” though only God could see
Who this person was, He knew exactly who he’d be!

We prayed for “Mr Katy” but didn’t make demands.
We gave it over to the Lord and left it in His hands.
We knew His perfect timing could not be second guessed,
We also knew the plans God had would always be the best!

We trusted “Mr Katy” would appear in ideal time.
The thing we didn’t know is that he’d hail from Norn Irn!
We’d have to tune our ears to all those Irish tones of his.
“The best wee country in world! It’s magic, so it is!”

We prayed for “Mr Katy” and the life he’d soon be sharing
For when you came along we all could see a perfect pairing!
In centre stage, your eyes did meet while whacking out top C’s!
Sparks began to fly as fingers flew across those keys!

Drama was afoot as “Mr Katy’s” heart was stricken!
A three act play of love began, all thanks to Mr Dickens!
Who knew that Scottish widows cloak would leave him in a stupor?
“The Ghost of Christmas Past” would play “The Wife of Christmas Future!”

Oh yes, this Christmas Carol got his senses all a-twitter!
He’d never seen such beauty nor that vast amount of glitter!
He found himself quite mesmerised by sequinned clothes, it’s true.
His heart was overjoyed to find a treasure such as you.

We prayed that “Mr Katy” would be wise and full of love.
We prayed you’d fit together like a hand fits in a glove.
Now “Mr Katy’s” here and you have filled his life with song
And so we praise the Lord that “Mr Katy’s” come along!

We prayed he’d have a selfless heart and be a man of God.
Although we hadn’t know his name, we knew he’d love the Lord!
God’s wisdom is superior, His timing’s never late
For “Mr Katy” loves you, he was more than worth the wait.

So we’ll continue praying as your one becomes a two.
We’ll pray for “Mr Katy,” he’s the other half of you!
Though now his title’s changing, it seems it’s only fair
To pray for Mr Gibson, now you’ve joined to make a pair!"

In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
