I Am The Light Of The World

John 8:12 reads,
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.””

The "I Am" Statements Of Jesus Christ- "I Am The Light Of The World."

Oh what a woeful journey, to walk in darkest night
Yet Jesus came to pay for sin and guide us to the light!
Sent to us from Heaven to set us free from strife,
He beckons us to follow Him and gain the light of life!

Our gracious Saviour calls to every soul who’s gone astray
And gives each one the promise that His light will lead the way.
Oh what a blesséd privilege to have the gift of sight!
Praises to the great “I Am” for He’s our shining Light!

1 John 1:5-7
“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.”

Points For Reflection
This statement from Jesus in John 8 comes straight after the incident where the woman caught in adultery is brought before Him. Instead of condemning the woman, Jesus shows her mercy and silences her accusers. His actions towards the woman were a strong and powerful contrast to the darkness of those opposing Jesus, the very people who had caught the woman in adultery.

His words that followed this encounter would have been all the more impactful as a result. To hear Jesus say, “I am the light of the world,” would have been doubly effective, having just witnessed this light in action.

The last words Jesus said to the adulterous woman were, “go and sin no more.” He was encouraging her to no longer walk in the darkness of sin but to walk in the light. He goes on to give this same command to each and every person in the next verse with His words,
“He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus was showing people with both His words and actions that He is the light of the world. He is the light that leads to life and the only One we can follow who can lead us out of darkness.

If you’re a Christian, do you remember walking from darkness into light? Do you remember that first rush of joy in your heart as you were brought out of the darkness of sin and condemnation and into the light of salvation?
How has following the light of Jesus transformed you in your life so far?

If you’re not a Christian, do you feel drawn to the light of Jesus or repelled by it? If you feel repelled by Jesus, why do you think that is? Is there something in your life that’s blocking you from coming to the Lord?

Please know that Jesus loves you and extends His mercy towards all who come to Him with an open heart. Please don’t let anything in your life prevent you from coming to know your loving Saviour.

Many times in life, I’ve met people who are reluctant to come to the light because they’re harbouring something that they know will be displeasing to God. As John 3:18-21 says,

“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

I remember how hard it was to hear that I was a sinner, lost in the darkness who needed to come to the light. No one likes to feel judged or condemned but just as Jesus extended grace and mercy to the woman caught in adultery, He extends that grace and mercy to me and you too.

I’m so grateful people loved me enough to tell me the truth and point me to the light. Sometimes the truth hurts but I needed to hear that I was walking in darkness in order for me to realise I needed the light!

If you don’t know Jesus as your Saviour today then I’ll share that same message with you that others shared with me. Jesus loves you. He died on the Cross to pay for your sins. He took your punishment in your place, same as He took mine. All you need to do is accept Him as your Saviour, accept Him into your heart and follow Him. Allow Him to be Lord of your life and to transform you from the inside out! I promise you that His light will set you free and it’ll be the best decision you ever make.

May we all look to Jesus today, the light of the world. May He shine His light into our lives and guide us, every step and every moment of each day.

Series Conclusion

I hope you’ve enjoyed my 2022 series, “The I Am Statements Of Jesus Christ.” We’ve looked at all seven “I Am” statements as we’ve gone through this year and the words of Jesus have certainly brought a lot of joy, comfort and reassurance to my soul.

With each “I Am” statement, Jesus was making the claim to be God Himself and showing us what God is like. If we want to know what God is like, the answer is only found in Christ. So in summary, what kind of things have we seen about God from the “I Am” statements of Jesus?

I Am The Door- Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
I Am The Good Shepherd- Jesus will take care of our soul for eternity.
I Am The Resurrection And The Life- Jesus has the power to raise our soul from the dead.
I Am The Bread Of Life- Jesus is the thing that will sustain us.
I Am The Vine- Jesus is our Creator and our source of strength.
I Am The Way, The Truth And The Life- Jesus is the only true path who can lead us to an eternity in the presence of our Creator.
I Am The Light Of The World- Jesus is the only Saviour who cuts through the darkness of sin.

We can see from these seven claims of Jesus that He is the visible expression of the invisible God. He reveals to us over and over again the character and power of Jehovah.

We can only come to know our Great Creator by knowing and studying the Person of His Son Jesus Christ. There is no other information outside of Jesus that will give us a correct understanding of who God is. Christ and Christ alone, is the visible manifestation of the invisible God because Christ is Himself, God manifest in flesh.

This is what makes the “I Am” statements of Jesus so crucial. They tell us who God is and show us what He is like. They reveal to us His nature and character and these verses inspire us to get to know Him more and more in a personal way. As Jesus said in John 14:9,

“He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

I pray my poetry series has helped us see our Saviour and our Heavenly Father more closely over this last year. May we look at these “I Am” statements of Jesus and go into the New Year with a deeper love, knowledge and appreciation for our wonderful King.

May our hearts be filled with adoration for our humble Saviour who came to show us in Person, the deep, deep love our Father has for us. To God be the glory! Praises to The Great I Am.
