To conclude my "Armour Up!" series, I decided to write a couplet version, focusing on each item on the Apostle Paul's list. My prayer is that these couplets can be easy to remember and helpful for memorising the full armour of God! L x
Ephesians 6:10-18The Whole Armour of God
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Couplets with Scriptures and summaries.
Number one, set your mind on things which are beyond reproof.
Get yourself prepared for war and buckle up the belt of truth.
(The foundation upon which all else is based.)
John 14:6
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Number two, don protection, confident this will suffice.
Clad your breast with righteousness; the kind that’s only found in Christ.
(Trusting in the righteousness imputed to us through Jesus.)
Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
Number three, hold your ground; our bravery need never cease.
Fit your feet with readiness that comes from knowing Jesus’ peace.
(The sure footedness and stability we have through the Gospel.)
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Number four, stand behind your faith in Christ, the Risen Son.
Raise your shield and quench the fiery darts sent by the evil one!
(Protection against spiritual attacks through our faith in Jesus.)
2 Thessalonians 3:3
“But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”
Number five, screen yourself from wicked blows of every kind;
The helmet of salvation will protect the thoughts within your mind.
(Guarding our minds by filtering all thoughts through the truth of our salvation.)
2 Corinthians 10:4-6
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”
Number six, raise your arm—the Spirit gives us all a Sword;
A mighty weapon of offence! Behold, it is the Word of God.
(Defending ourselves with Scripture while also conquering ground through the application of God’s Word.)
2 Peter 1:19-20
“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
