As you may have gathered from my poem last month called “A Shakespearean Infatuation”, I’m quite a dog-lover! For the most part, I have to admire them from afar due to allergies, but thanks to the introduction of the poodle mix dogs, I can, on occasion, enjoy the company of a canine friend without consequence!
I’m afraid to say, however, I don’t hold the same fond feelings for their feline counterparts. (Sincerest apologies to the cat-lovers of this world!) I know there are some beautiful and affectionate moggies out there, but sadly, I’ve had too many encounters with the sneaky, unpredictably scratchy types who look like they belong on the lap of a Bond villain to feel at ease around cats.
As a result, if ever I find myself on the receiving end of some feline attention, I’m not slow in politely moving on! It was one such event that inspired my poem, “Big Fat Ginger Cat.” Not surprisingly, this is the very same gent who I mentioned in “A Shakespearean Infatuation.” I felt such a formidable presence was definitely worthy of his own poem as he definitley gives main character energy!

I think you might just be the fattest cat there is alive.
You stare at me with yellow eyes, in silence you observe
Everyone who passes you and see who holds their nerve!
Your size is rather daunting as you watch with sheer disdain.
I know you live at “Turquoise House” but I don’t know your name.
I feel it’s only fair to say, you tried to say hello.
But this was out of character, so how was I to know?
You cats are unpredictable! Your ways are quite unruly.
You come to say “Good day” but then unleash the claws of fury!
You see, I’ve met your kind before, and though it starts off well,
It isn’t long ’til it becomes a razor-bladed hell!
You felines can’t be trusted, and so I had to say,
When you came up meowing, “No thank you!” and “Not today!”
Perhaps you thought we might be friends, perhaps you looked for fun.
But still, I feared the evil schemes you’d plotted in the sun.
Your slanted eyes looked shifty, I saw your needle teeth.
Suspicions roused, I questioned all your motives underneath.
So let’s go back to silence as I pass you in the car.
Inscrutably we’ll stare, and watch each other from afar.
Romans 12:18
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
