The Second Commandment- "You shall not make idols."

Taking a look at the second commandment for the start of February and the continuation of my series, "The Ten Commandments." This month's focus is, "You shall not make idols."

Exodus 20:1-17
The Ten Commandments

“And God spoke all these words, saying:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,  but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
“You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s.””
The Second Commandment
“You shall not make idols.”

"Behold, The Ten Commandments, recorded in God’s Word!
To think they don’t apply to us would really be absurd!
The wisdom found within these laws, we cannot take away,
So how can we apply these truths within our lives today?

“You shall not carve an image.” Commandment number two,
Making clear we bow the knee to no one else but You.
For You, O Lord are Spirit and so Your Word commands
We worship You alone and not things made by human hands.

Let wood or concrete idols play no part in our story
For earthly, carven images cannot contain Your glory!
Your Scriptures give instruction for correction and reproof.
Oh may we glorify You Lord, in spirit and in truth! "

Deuteronomy 4:12
“And the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; you only heard a voice.”

John 4:24
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Acts 17:22-31
“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:

TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’
Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

Let’s Pray

Thank You Lord Jesus for the wisdom of Your Word. You reveal to us that while there is nothing wrong with artistic representations or depictions of You, created from a heart that loves You, You wisely warn us against building physical images or idols to be revered and worshipped. You know and understand man’s desire to worship and You know our tendency to want to show our adoration to something we can touch, feel and see.
As Your Word reminds us Father, our worship of You is to be word-based, not image-based.
Remove any temptation we may have to bow down to or revere anything created and instead, remind us in that moment that we bow to our Creator!
You and You alone are to be worshipped in spirit and in truth. Strip away any idols, symbols or statues in our lives, Lord that rob You of the worship You are due. You will not share our heart’s worship with anyone for You alone are worthy of our praise. Keep us in line with You, Lord. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
