When I Feel...Lonely

February's instalment of my, "When I Feel..." series addresses the feeling of loneliness. I pray this short meditation and poem can bring us comfort this week. L x
"When I’m feeling lonely, friendless and alone,
Remind me, as a child of God, I’m never on my own.
When I feel abandoned, forsaken and rejected,
Help me to recall the truth that I am not neglected.

Should my heart feel desolate and quite without companion,
May Your Word remind me that You never will abandon
Those who put their trust in You, You’re closer than a brother.
Father to the fatherless, You’re faithful like no other.

Knowing You are with me in all that I go through,
Draw me closer, gentle Lord, as I draw close to You.
Though others may be absent from this solitary place,
Wrap me in Your loving arms and in Your warm embrace.

Bring my spirit comfort Lord, beyond all earthly measure.
May my soul be reassured in knowing I’m Your treasure.
Casting all my care on You, fulfil my heart’s desire.
Nothing do I lack for You are all that I require.

Cherished and accepted, I’m valued and adored;
Nothing can remove me from the love of Christ, my Lord.
May I not be downcast or lonesome in this time,
For You have called me by name. I’m Yours and You are mine."

Romans 8:35-39
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Psalm 68:5-6
“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.
God sets the lonely in families,
he leads out the prisoners with singing;
but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.”

Psalm 27:10
“When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.”

1 Peter 5:7
“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

Matthew 28:20
“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Isaiah 43:1
“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.”

Heart Check

Am I feeling lonely today? Do I feel isolated, whether it be in a physical sense or more in the sense of feeling alone in my thoughts or feelings towards a situation? When I consider the truth that as a Christian, Jesus is always with me, no matter where I go in life, does this bring my heart comfort and help me to feel less alone?

God’s Word brings wonderful encouragement and reassurance for His children, reminding us that we are always under the loving watch of El Roi, the God who sees.
If we’re feeling lonely in some way, let’s bring that feeling to Jesus in prayer and ask Him to fill us up with the presence of Holy Spirit. Jesus can go places others can’t and is with us no matter what time of day or night it is.

Sometimes we may also just need a bit of human contact, a listening ear or a warm hug from someone. If you’re feeling like this today, please do reach out to a person you know and trust. Maybe it’s a friend, a family member or someone at your Church. God never intended for us to go through life as an island, separated from others and this is what the Body Of Christ is there for. We’re there for each other, to help one another through the different seasons of life.

Whatever we’re facing today, may we find wonderful peace and reassurance knowing that Jesus, our faithful Companion and First Love is always with us, even to the end of the age.
