In this world we’re often told we don’t need anyone else and we frequently hear affirming phrases such as “you can do it” and “you are enough.” While having a positive mindset is a good thing to have in life, in truth there is only One who is entirely self-sufficient and that’s God.
Within His being, God has an infinite measure of every good quality and ability there is to possess so this makes Him completely independent of His creation, including us! He doesn’t need to turn to anyone or anything else to seek strength or wisdom, love or compassion or anything at all for that matter. He is entirely self-sufficient and relies on no one. As flawed human beings, it’s quite hard to imagine but that’s why He’s God and we’re not!
Knowing that our Creator is not dependent on anyone or anything is incredibly encouraging and comforting for several reasons. Firstly, it means that our worth to God is not dependent on His “need” for us. Unlike human relationships which can so often be based on what we “bring to the table,” our fellowship with God is based entirely on the fact that He created us in His image so that we might have a relationship with Him. We can’t “do” anything to earn our worth or make us valuable to Him, we’er already valuable because of what He’s done! How wonderfully liberating!
Secondly, we know our salvation is dependent on a God who is not dependent on us and so once again, this highlights how it’s all down to who He is and what He’s done. If our salvation were down to us, it would be a very uncertain and unreliable thing indeed. None of us can earn our way into Heaven as the Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9. It’s by grace we have been saved, not by works lest any one should boast. It’s solely thanks to the work of Christ on the Cross that any of us can gain salvation.
Thirdly, our worship to God is not something He requires or needs from us. Paul tells us in Acts 17:25,
“Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.”
If God needed our worship this would mean He is flawed and could be manipulated. If He needed us to worship Him then this would imply He has a weakness in His character, rendering Him no better than us and therefore not worthy of worship. Au contraire!
God is perfect, powerful, mighty, faithful, strong and unchanging! He is self-sufficient, has all He needs and more and so is more than worthy of our praise! We praise Him not because He needs it but because He is worthy! All glory to our incredible, self-sufficient God!
