The book of Psalms is my favourite book in the Bible and it never ceases to amaze me how powerfully the words speak into the different situations we face in life. I often try to read a Psalm each day and one evening in September 2020 I happened to read Psalm 93.
Before opening my Bible that evening, I had been chatting with my husband Jan about the chaos caused by the Covid-19 pandemic over the last few months and how it seemed to be continuously getting worse. I was feeling quite disheartened by it all so when I turned to Psalm 93 that night, I was blown away by the first three words alone!
The Psalm begins with the statement, “The Lord reigns.” This truth was like a sword that just cut straight through all the nonsense going on in the world and I laughed to myself as I thought, ”Amen! Well I might as well close my Bible! What else is there to say? The Lord reigns!”
I meditated for a few minutes on this comforting fact before going on to read the rest of the Psalm and be equally encouraged by the truths laid out in those verses too. They really helped me get a good perspective on things and I went to sleep that night feeling much more at peace with the situation even though nothing had outwardly changed.
Over the few evenings that followed I went on to read Psalms 94-99 and discovered that those same three words, “The Lord reigns” appear several times throughout along with many wonderful and powerful truths about who God is. With such incredibly inspiring text it wasn’t long before I found myself writing a poem which was really just an exaltation that came from my heart as I meditated on the things I had been reading in these chapters. I thank the Lord for the beautifully insightful gift of the Psalms and I pray my poem “The Lord Reigns!” can be an encouraging and uplifting gift too!

Declare His glory across the Earth, the news of salvation proclaim!
Yes sing to the Lord, the Lord most high! He is great and greatly to be praised!
Break forth in song and let the seas roar! May the voice of the rivers be raised!
The Lord reigns! Oh give to the Lord the glory and honour He’s due.
Come to His courts and shout with all joy for the marvellous things He will do!
The kings of the Earth shall give Him their praise, the mountains will melt in His sight.
Holy and righteous and upright is He and none can compete with His might!
The Lord reigns! Oh worship the Lord! Bow down and await His command.
For He is our God, our Rock and our King and we are the sheep of His hand.
His Throne is established, He’s girded with strength and coming to judge every nation.
Clothed in His majesty, mighty in truth, the Lord has made known His salvation!
The Lord reigns! Oh sing to the Lord! Exalt Him and lift up your voice!
He executes justice and saves with His arm so let all the peoples rejoice!
The God-Who-Forgives shows mercy and grace, the souls of the saints He sustains.
Shout with all jubilance, lift your hands high! Give thanks to our God! The Lord reigns!

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.”

“For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.”
Psalm 98:1-2
“Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvellous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. The Lord has made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.”
