A Higher Calling

By Lucy Wall

It would seem that the year 2016 was a very interesting one for politics and global unrest. As a result I began to see many heated debates and extremely ugly arguments appearing on social media, sometimes even amongst Christians. It was this that inspired me to write my poem.

My prayer is that the poem can encourage us all to pray for our leaders just like the Bible exhorts us to do in 2 Timothy 2:1-2 where it says,

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”

I also hope it can encourage us to keep our eyes on Jesus regardless of what our own political persuasions might be. As Psalm 133:1 says,

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

Brethren, do not fret and quarrel. Do not wallow in despair.
Keep your focus Heaven bound and find your peace in humble prayer.
Take your rest in Holy Scriptures, do not war within your soul.
Always keep in mind the truth that Jesus Christ is in control.

Let's not give our hearts to worry or the sorrow it can bring;
Striving with those close to us as if we do not know our King!
Never find us pointing fingers, cursing others to our shame.
If we must succumb to pointing let us point to Jesus' name!

We don't look to man or woman, putting hope in empty words,
Knowing that their promises will fly away like startled birds.
Ours is such a higher calling! Trusting in our God above,
Holding close His promises while showing all Agape love.

Though our views may often differ, let disputes and squabbles cease.
Unified through Christ we'll stand as we aim to dwell in peace.
Let us not neglect our leaders, may we lift them up in prayer.
Ask that God would grant them wisdom, knowing Christ has put them there.

No one gains their earthly power by the will of man alone;
All of their authority is granted by God's sovereign Throne.
Whether we support their vision, whether we give vain applaud,
Let us rest in knowing they're appointed by the hand of God.

Given place to serve His purpose, His objectives to fulfil.
Nothing will unfold that's not according to His sovereign will.
Let's submit to Jesus' wisdom knowing He is fair and just.
Certain in His character, in Christ we safely place our trust.

Nothing can surprise our Saviour, nothing goes against His plan.
He is one who keeps His word and holds us in His mighty palm.
He has said He'll never leave us, never let us drown in fear,
Vowing He will meet our needs and wipe away our every tear.

Promising in times of darkness He will give us strength to cope,
Thinking of our future days with thoughts of peace to give us hope.
May we look to Christ our Shepherd as He leads us with His staff.
Let's give God His rightful place and let Him work on our behalf!

Brothers do not be despondent, sisters do not be enticed.
Turning neither right nor left, we're centred in the truth of Christ.
Brethren let us not be sleeping, we are in the final days!
Rise above the petty scoffing, shun profane and idle ways!

Scriptures tell us Christ is coming! All will bow down at His feet;
Ruling over Washington and making naught of Downing Street.
Dwelling in these latter days our unity we must preserve.
Yes we vote for leaders here but let's remember who we serve!

Jesus Christ, the God of Heaven! Lord and Ruler over all!
At a single word from Him all the earthly kingdoms fall!
Let us not forget His power! God forbid we vainly grope.
Let us not behave as if we've lost our faith and have no hope!

We have such a higher calling! Looking to our perfect Guide,
Watchful as the stage is set, He's coming back to claim His Bride!
Though we live in times of peril God is still upon His Throne.
May we lift our eyes to Heaven knowing Christ will lead us home!

Romans 13:1-2
"Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgement on themselves."

2 Timothy 2:23-3:5
"But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.  And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying it's power. And from such people turn away!"

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Proverbs 4:27
"Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil."

Proverbs 16:20
"He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he."
