So Many Songs!

My poem called "So Many Songs!" was inspired by a little bird I was listening to while I was on holiday in Florida. He was going through his repertoire of many, varied songs and as I sat there listening to him I thought to myself, "So many songs! It almost sounds like he's having an identity crisis!"

It was this thought that inspired me to write a poem about my little winged friend and his make-believe adventure of discovery. I wrote it as a story for children but I hope it can bring some joy to grown-up children too!

A little bird sat in a tree
And sang his song quite merrily.
A "tweet, tweet, tweet" and a "toot, toot, toot!"
A "chirp, chirp, chirp" and a "hoot, hoot, hoot!"

A butterfly was flying by
And said to him "Oh me! Oh my!"
"So many songs you seem to sing
Whilst on a branch or on the wing!"

"Yours song are heard from near and far!
I'd like to know what bird you are."
The little bird went to reply
But then he said "Oh me! Oh my!"

"I do not know what bird I am!
To find out is a clever plan!
So many songs I like to sing
Whilst on a branch or on the wing."

"There must be someone else like me,
I'll go and find another tree!"
Deciding that's what he should do,
He spread his wings and off he flew!

So as he soared and looked around
It wasn't long before he found
Another bird with songs to sing.
"I wonder if I'm just like him?"

"Coo, coo! I'm like you! For I sound like a pigeon too!"
"Coo, coo. You are like me! But only in your sound, you see?
For you don't have my bobbing head,
It looks a different kind instead.
Your feathers aren't a mottled grey,
So you're a different bird I'd say!"

"Well that's not right and this won't do.
I'll try again!" And off he flew.
There must be someone else like me.
I'll have to find another tree!"

So as he soared and looked around
It wasn't long before he found
Another bird with songs to sing.
"I wonder if I'm just like him?"

"Caw, caw! I'm like you! For I sound like a raven too!"
"Caw, caw. You are like me! But only in your sound, you see?
My long, thick beak you seem to lack,
Your feathers aren't a glossy black.
I hope it doesn't spoil your day
But you're a different bird I'd say!"

"Well that's not right and this won't do.
I'll try again!" And off he flew.
There must be someone else like me.
Perhaps I'll try a taller tree!"

So as he soared and looked around
It wasn't long before he found
Another bird with songs to sing.
"I wonder if I'm just like him?"

"Scree, scree! I'm like you! For I sound like an eagle too!"
"Scree, scree. You are like me! But only in your sound you see?
For you don't have my head of white,
Or yellow eyes with hunter's sight.
No sharpened claws to catch your prey,
So you're a different bird I'd say!"

"Well that's not right and this won't do.
I'll try again!" And off he flew.
There must be someone else like me.
Perhaps I'll try a shorter tree!"

So as he soared and looked around
It wasn't long before he found
Another bird with songs to sing.
"I wonder if I'm just like him?"

"Tweet, tweet! I'm like you! For I sound like a bluebird too!"
"Tweet, tweet. You are like me! But only in your sound you see?
In boldest blue my feathers bloom!
It seems you have a lighter plume.
My colours sit in fine array!
But you're a different bird I'd say."

"Well that's not right and this won't do.
I'll try again!" And off he flew.
Someone must have songs like mine.
Perhaps I'll try the pond this time!"

So as he soared and looked around
It wasn't long before he found
Another bird with songs to sing.
"I wonder if I'm just like him?"

"Quack, quack! I'm like you! For I sound like a mallard too!"
"Quack, quack. You are like me! But only in your sound you see?
My yellow bill and head of green
On you, are nowhere to be seen!
My feet are webbed, I swim all day!
But you're a different bird I'd say."

"Your search need not come to an end
For you could go and ask my friend!"
"Perhaps that's something I should do!
I'll go ask him!" And off he flew.

"Honk, honk! I'm like you! For I sound like a big goose too!"
"Honk, honk. You are like me! But only in your sound you see?
My feathers are as white as snow,
I like to waddle to and fro!
Your neck is short, to my dismay!
So you're a different bird I'd say!"

The little bird sighed with despair.
"I can't find answers anywhere!"
So as he thought there hard and long
He heard a complicated song.

A song just like the one he knew.
"Why that's my song!" And off he flew.
"I hear a bird who sounds like me!
Oh look! She's singing in that tree!"

"Honk, tweet, coo! I'm like you! For I sing different bird songs too!"
"Caw, quack, scree! You ARE like me! And not just in your sound you see?
Your wings are small and tipped with white,
Your beak is a familiar sight.
Your feathers are black, white and grey,
So you're the same as me I'd say!"

"Hooray! Hoorah! At last I've found
Another bird like me around!
So please do tell me if you can,
Reveal what kind of bird I am!"

"You do not know? Why that's absurd!
You sound just like a Mocking Bird!
The tunes you sing cannot go wrong,
For you adapt to every song!"

"Of course! It makes such perfect sense!"
He said, as they sat on a fence.
"I listen with each tiny ear
And then repeat the sounds I hear.

So many songs and I know why!
We must go tell the butterfly!
I'm really glad that I met you."
"Me too!" She said. And off they flew.
