Born This Way

By Lucy Wall

Discussing the issue of sin can often be very difficult and uncomfortable. It’s part of our nature to want to defend ourselves so being able to recognise and admit to our faults and flaws challenges us to the very core. It is however an essential part to receiving God ’s forgiveness and everlasting life because without acknowledging our sin and repenting of it, we can never be accepted into His presence.

In society these days there seems to be a common opinion that “right and wrong” are subjective and there are no moral absolutes.   Many times I’ve heard people trying to defend or excuse their sin by using the statement, "I was born this way" or words to that effect. I’ve heard it said, “If there is a God then He made me this way ” or “It ’s not my fault I have a fiery temper, I was born this way! ”

The world teaches us that there probably is no God and even if there is, we don t have to acknowledge Him. Just live life for ourselves in any way that we feel is right, do what we think will make us happy and don ’t ever apologise for being the way we are. After all, we were born this way!

The Bible teaches us something very different however. It teaches us that there definitely is a God and He created us but did not create the sin in us. He is our Maker but as a result of our rebellion we are all born with a sinful nature. The Bible shows us that despite our rebellion, He loves us dearly but hates our sin and because He is a righteous God He cannot accept our sin into His presence.

Thankfully because of God’s amazing love for us, He paid for our sin by sending His Son Jesus to the Cross where He took the punishment that we deserved. As a result we all have the free-will to choose whether or not to accept God ’s gift of grace through this sacrifice. The Bible also tells us that one day we will all stand before God to give an account of our lives. We will either do this with Jesus as our loving Saviour or as our righteous Judge, depending on our response to the Cross of Christ.

To stay stubbornly attached to our sin and refuse God's free gift of grace is a tragedy for this life and the next. Christ has dealt with this issue for us and there is no sin in the world that He didn't pay for on the Cross. There is no sin that His power cannot help us overcome. All we have to do is recognise our sin for what it is and stop loving it more than God.

To believe ”I was born this way ” is a feasible excuse for sin is to believe in a lie of Satan. I felt inspired to write a poem that opposed this lie and pointed instead to the truth.

"I was born this way!" I hear people say
"So don’t you dare tell me there comes Judgement Day!
There’s no sin in me as far as I see
And I make my own rules up to benefit me."

"Don’t tell me what’s right in your narrow sight
For I don’t believe He’s the Truth or the Light!
If you think it’s true it applies then to you
But I won’t accept being told what to do."

"I see myself wise in my own pair of eyes,
From God and His presence I sever all ties.
But if He should exist then I shall resist
And in His direction I now shake my fist."

"My life is my own so if God’s on His Throne
You can tell Him from me He’d best leave me alone.
I don’t want to change, my life rearrange.
They’d all think I’m crazy or gone a bit strange."

"Besides I’m quite good! When I’m in the right mood.
So I use the odd word that’s a little bit crude.
And so what if I lie or make people cry?
There are much worse than me! No one’s going to die!"

"You can beg, plead and nudge but I never will budge.
Of my actions and life I will be my own judge!
Besides who can tell if there’s really a hell?
I’ll meet all my friends there and get on quite well!"

"And God makes no mistakes with the people He makes.
So I'll be true to myself for that's all it takes.
If I sin every day, well He made me that way!
And I think I'm great so what more can I say?"

"No there’s nothing I lack and I’m on the right track.
I was born this way and I’ll never look back.
And I don’t want to hear there’s a God I should fear!
I’m king of my life! Do I make myself clear?"

How it saddens my heart and tears me apart
To hear that from Jesus some choose to depart.
Yes God makes no mistakes with the people He makes
But your sin is not His so just put on the brakes!

It’s because of the fall that sin dwells in us all.
Between God and man sits rebellion’s wall.
So we all have to face that our sin’s a disgrace
And thank the Lord Jesus for His saving grace!

We may not want to hear there's a God we should fear
But there is, He's our Maker who loves us so dear.
So we cannot excuse the sins that we choose,
Denial is merely a tactic we use.

I’m no better than you for I’m sinful too
But all found in Jesus have now been made new.
So please open your eyes and see Satan’s lies.
From him and his presence please sever all ties!

Now please understand I wish not to sound grand
But long only to see that you take the Lord’s hand.
Christ died on the tree to save you and me!
He paid off our debt and set us all free.

Removing our sin so that we could come in
And dwell in His Kingdom forever with Him.
For those who won’t kneel, His wrath they will feel
For they have rejected the one who can heal.

They can’t say they knew not or that they just forgot
As they give an account when receiving their lot.
God’s shown us the truth and He’s given us proof,
We can never accuse Him of being aloof.

There’s so much you could lose if you will not choose
The one sent from Heaven to bring us good news!
You could learn of His love and be blessed from above,
Receive His forgiveness as white as a dove.

For those who will trust in the God who is just
Will all be found blameless when flesh turns to dust.
His Word does confirm that this truth will stand firm
But He never will force you to love in return.

For He came not to preach but to save and to teach,
The gift of free-will Jesus never will breach.
Should you long for His voice and to make the right choice
You’ll find freedom and make hosts of Heaven rejoice!

We were born this way just as you say
So we have to repent for there comes Judgement Day.
Dear friend I will pray that you heed what I say.
Choose Jesus and be born again a new way!

John 3:1-7

"There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,
"Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus said to Him,
"How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
Jesus answered,
"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you,
'You must be born again.'"
