Happy Birthday Jesus!

I’ve always been a huge fan of Christmas time and the smell of a real fir tree instantly transports me back to the Christmases of my childhood. My Dad would buy us a real tree each year and my sister Ashley and I would spend a joyous evening decorating it with my Mum while Christmas music played in the background. Happy memories indeed.

One particular tradition I distinctly remember in our home on Christmas morning was something my Mum did with us each year. Either Ashley or myself would wake up with excitement in the early hours of the morning, get the other one out of bed and then wake my Mum up. We would make our way down the stairs together where we would find the partition curtains in the middle of the living room closed over, our named Santa sacks patiently waiting on the other side!

Before we were allowed to burst through the curtains to see what gifts we had received, my Mum would always take a couple of minutes to pray with us and thank Jesus for coming to this Earth. Every year she made sure that we acknowledged and remembered the true meaning of Christmas before allowing us to enter into the carefree abandon and joy of present opening!

When I look back at those years I really appreciate my Mum’s simple but effective way of sowing the seed of God’s Word into our young lives. It certainly didn’t return void as both Ashley and I went on to commit our lives to Jesus.

Skipping forward several years to one Sunday morning in December 2019, I had just shared my poem “Christmas Presence” with my Church when I suddenly had the idea to write a short poem that could be used on Christmas Morning. My desire was to write something that might act in the same way my Mum’s annual Christmas prayer did and acknowledge Jesus on Christmas Day.

My hope is that this little poem can be used by parents everywhere to bring the true meaning of Christmas to the hearts and lives of their children before Christmas chaos ensues! Christmas gifts may bring joy for a time but Jesus is the Reason for the season and He’s the greatest Gift of all!
Happy Birthday Jesus! We celebrate today,
Giving thanks You came to Earth to take our sins away.
Help us take a moment to still our heart and mind
And focus on the truth that You were born to save mankind.

Though presents and excitement may fill our lives with joy,
May we not forget to thank God’s precious baby Boy.
We’re grateful for the gifts we have and all the fun they’ll bring
But help us see our greatest Gift is Jesus Christ our King!

Although this day is full of cheer with lots of Christmas fuss,
We pause to praise Your name, Emmanuel, God with us!
So happy Birthday Jesus, we love You through and through.
We’re grateful You remind us Christmas Day is all for You!

Matthew 1:20-22

“But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.””

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
