When I Feel...Angry

Anger is an interesting emotion and we know from Scripture, specifically Matthew 21, that even Jesus felt angry when He saw how His Father's Temple had been turned into nothing more than a "den of thieves."

There are so many situations in life that can cause us to feel angry but it's important that we recognise whether our anger is a righteous or fleshly anger and process them both in a Biblical way.

I pray March's meditation from my, "When I Feel..." series can help us keep a Biblical check and perspective on any anger we may be feeling today. Love Lucy x
"When I feel consumed by anger, when frustration overflows,
When my soul is livid, Lord, remind me where the Christian goes!
Father, there are many things that stir up irate thoughts each day,
Help me to recall the truth that this is when I need to pray!

When another treats me poorly and my wrath has raised it’s head,
Let me not respond in kind but call upon Your name instead.
Though these feelings may be valid, though they may be justified,
Help me put to death the flesh and may Your name be glorified!

Let me take my prideful anger, help me, Lord to tame it well.
May I turn the other cheek and quench those fiery darts from hell.
Help my spirit cease from strife, my flesh will only lead astray.
Let me give it no provision! Revive me in Your perfect way.

Help me take my righteous anger, may it drive a pure pursuit.
Let my conduct be a witness, may it render godly fruit.
Send Your Spirit to assist me, grant me rest within my soul.
May my words and actions shine with love and grace and self control.

When my heart is vexed within me, let me know I’m not alone.
Whatever be the catalyst, may it drive me to Your Throne!
God forbid I bring dishonour. Keep me, Lord from deep regret.
I must put on Jesus Christ! A truth my soul should not forget."

Psalm 37:8
“Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.”

Ecclesiastes 7:9
“Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.”

James 1:19-20
“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Romans 12:19
“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath;
for it is written,
“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”

Psalm 4:3-5
“But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly;
The Lord will hear when I call to Him.
Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And put your trust in the Lord.”

Heart Check

Am I feeling angry about something today?
If so, is it a righteous anger, stirred up by my sense of injustice or is it a sinful anger, roused because my pride or ego have been bruised?
Have I been harbouring this anger for a while? If so, how is this affecting me and my life? Have I prayed about the situation that has caused me to feel angry?
When I consider that God is a righteous God who loves justice, sees all things and will right every wrong in His perfect time, does this help me to find a rest in my heart in regards to the situation?

If we’re feeling angry today in an ungodly way, may we be willing to bring this before God’s Throne in repentance and ask our patient and gentle Saviour to replace this anger with His perfect peace.
If we’re feeling angry today in a righteous way due to an injustice either in our own life or the life of someone else, may we channel this energy through prayer, knowing the Lord understands our plight. May our desire to see the right thing done, be a positive force in our life and inspire us to live righteously for God’s glory.
