I can't quite believe it but we're on the tenth and last commandment! This year I've been going through The Ten Commandments as one of my poetry series and I've found it so interesting to delve into these Scriptures.
The first nine commandments are based on the things we do, the last one deals with the heart and what it desires. I pray this little poem and meditation can be a blessing to you today. Much love, Lucy x
Exodus 20:1-17
The Ten Commandments
“And God spoke all these words, saying:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
“You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s.””

"Behold, The Ten Commandments, recorded in God’s Word!
To think they don’t apply to us would really be absurd!
The wisdom found within these laws, we cannot take away,
So how can we apply these truths within our lives today?
We’re told, “You shall not covet.” Commandment number ten.
This sin can tempt the best of us, every now and then!
The last commandment deals with the desires of our heart,
When jealousy or deep dissatisfaction make a start.
Desiring possession of another’s earthly wealth.
Itching to obtain their goods and gain them for ourself.
Relating to idolatry, Lord keep us from this sin!
May we be content in Christ and satisfied in Him."
Psalm 119:36-37
“Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.”
Luke 12:15
“And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.””
Ephesians 5:5
“For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”
Hebrews 13:5
“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.
For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Let’s Pray
Lord Jesus, please forgive me for the times when I have longed after the things other people have. May the desires of my heart be in line with Your will for my life and may I feel content and satisfied in You alone.
Thank You for all the many blessings You have given me to enjoy in this life and please help me to keep a check on the desires of my heart each day. If my focus starts to wander onto the earthly things others possess, I ask that Your Holy Spirit would give me a gentle reminder to redirect my energies onto Heavenly matters. Keep me from coveting what other people have and may I live an abundant life, full of joy that only contentment in Jesus can bring. I ask these things in Your wonderful name, Amen.
