When I Feel...Confused

There are so many things in life that can leave us feeling confused. God is not the Author of confusion however so may we find guidance, wisdom and clarity as we bring our situations before His Throne. Love Lucy x

"When I’m lost in deep confusion and I’m feeling most perplexed,
When I’m puzzled by events, mystified and rather vexed,
When I don’t know which direction I should take or where to go,
May I bring it all before the Saviour I am blessed to know.

Strip away each vile deception, anything that’s not of You.
Calm my thoughts and show me clearly only what is right and true.
You do not create confusion, guide me Lord and light the way.
Clarify the situation, show me what You have to say.

As I delve into Your Scriptures, may they serve to clarify,
Let me see Your will shine through and let the picture simplify.
Help me seek out godly counsel, may they give me sound advice.
Melt away the devil’s lies and cast aside each dark device.

Help me Lord to test the spirits, may I question what I hear.
Teach me Lord to know Your voice and may the road ahead be clear.
Help me to be sober-minded, seeking You in all my ways,
Trusting that Your faithfulness will safely lead me through my days.

Lord, I ask You grant me wisdom, let my fears and doubts decrease.
May I go with confidence, resting in Your perfect peace.
Give my spirit understanding, let confounding play no part.
Lord, direct my paths I pray. I follow You with all my heart."

Psalm 119:169
“Let my cry come before You, O Lord;
Give me understanding according to Your word.”

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”

1 Corinthians 14:33
“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”

2 Timothy 2:7
“Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.”

James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Heart Check

There are many scenarios in life that can cause us to feel confused. Whether we’re feeling mildly befuddled by something to deeply perplexed with no idea which way to turn, it’s generally not nice to feel like we don’t know what to do. Whether it’s deciding which direction to go in in life or how to best represent Jesus in a troubling situation, the best thing we can do in any scenario is turn to Jesus in prayer.
As James 1:5 tells us, God gives wisdom liberally to all and without reproach so we needn’t feel concerned or silly about asking God to help us in our situation.

A second step we can take to help relieve confusion is read the Bible and search the Scriptures for what God’s Word has to say or advise on the matter.
Another thing we can do is seek godly counsel from a brother or sister in Christ whom we trust. We must be careful not to use this as an opportunity to over-share details or gossip about another person but we can certainly ask for help and wisdom from someone who’s not as close to the situation. A more objective perspective can be very helpful for clarity at times.

I’ve faced many times in my own life when I’ve been very unsure about which way to go when it comes to work and felt very torn about what to do.
I always invite God into the situation and ask Him to show me where He wants to use me the most and what option has most eternal weight. I only ever want to be in the centre of God’s will and be used for His glory so I ask Him to reveal to me what He would have me do.
Practically speaking, this means I bring my situation before God in prayer, picture every option available to me and ask where my peace lies. An opportunity can seem great on the outside but if I picture going down a particular road and don’t seem to have a peace about it in my heart, I generally know this isn’t God’s will for me.

I don’t rush this process and make sure I take time to weigh up the options and really seek the Lord’s wisdom but eventually I always find I have a peace when I picture one of the options before me. It hasn’t always been the one I might have expected but God is always faithful to show me what He would have me do and confirms this with the presence of His peace in my soul.
Then whatever lies ahead, I know I can proceed with confidence, secure in the knowledge that Jesus is with me.

Now might be a good time to ask ourselves,
Am I feeling confused by something going on in my life right now? Am I feeling unsure about which direction to go in or how I should act within a certain situation? Am I puzzled by the way some events have unfolded or the way people have behaved and I’m not sure what to do with this?

If we are feeling confused about something right now, let’s bring it before God’s Throne today in prayer and ask Him to shine His heavenly light on our circumstances. As the Scriptures say, God is not the Author of confusion.
May we seek His presence in prayer, gain wisdom from His Word, receive help from a trusted counsellor or friend and attain clarity on God’s will for our lives through the blesséd gift of His perfect peace.
